I’d like to commend the Ford engineers that designed the 2.0 Duratec in the 2010 Mazda 3

Kinja'd!!!

My fiancée drives a beater 300,000mi 2010 Mazda 3 that her family has owned since new. I t’s generally a very reliable car, but yesterday on her drive to work the low oil pressure light came on. She had no clue what it meant but figured it wasn’t good, so she continued to drive to work where she proceeded to call me. I walked her through checking the dipstick which was completely dry. I instructed her to buy 2 quarts of oil, dump it in, and drive the 70 miles home so I could take a look.

Kinja'd!!!

Today I did an oil change and only drained 2.5 quarts of oil. This car had been running at and around 0.5 quarts total for who knows how long! It only got an oil change 3500 miles preciously, so it must be burning at quite the rate. For reference it takes 4.5qts.

I have a feeling we’re going to be buying a new used car for her sooner rather than later. Any  oppos selling a car that’s boring, not too big, and an automatic?

A Mirage or Spark as new as you can get, and get rustproofing done to it :o)

Krown every year will do wonders.

I have big boring 50k mile grand marquis of the same vintage but it only gets 29-30mpg  on the freeway, I really don't need it anymore and the wife would be happy if I thinned the herd.

I had an ‘04 Mazda3 with the 2.3l version and while the rest of the car disintegrated around it (rust, mostly) that engine was solid the whole way through its 220k miles ( on the original clutch, afaik). It got sent  off to scrap about a year and a half ago, after a 10 year tenure in the family. It was a good car.

I could be wrong but I think Mazda made the 4 cylinders and ford made the v6's in the partnership. Either way, they are great reliable cars I was a Mazda tech, and I just bought my 2nd Mazda 2 and that's my 5th Mazda.

You’d hate mine even more. They’re both foggy, but one is foggier than the other

You should tell her the same “rule of dashboard lights” that I told my wife:

Yellow/amber light - drive home and tell me

Red light - pull over, shut it off, and call me

Get a Volvo C30. Same chassis and a more interesting engine.

I’ve polished them in the past and the haze always comes back, even with a coat of wax.

Why not just swap a new engine in? I think the ones for my car are like $300 (because people blow them up all the time) , so you could probably swap a new one in pretty cheap and keep going...
